Horse: Daddy's Overdraft
Rider: Lucy McCummins
For: End of Year Juvenile Turf - December Week 3
The sun was high in the sky when Lucy reached Cobweb's stall. The pretty gray filly was stomping her hooves impatiently and swinging her head from side to side. "Gosh you are gorgeous" Lucy said as she admired one of her new additions to Durango Racing Stables. The filly snorted in response. She was ready to get out of her stall. She kicked the door. "Hang on, girl. Let me get your tack out."
Lucy lead Cobbers out onto crossties after she placed her tack off to the side. She got a brush and brushed away the loose dirt on her body. The filly kept throwing her head up. She couldn't stand waiting. Lucy just giggled and continued grooming the stubborn horse. She glanced in her eyes and saw the fire deep within. She knew this was a champion in the making.
Cobbers had only one workout for the season and she hadn't raced in a long while. Lucy wanted to give her a chance for one last race before the start of her 3 year old season. Her record was pretty good with 3 wins out of 5 starts. The other two races were second place finishes. Lucy saw the potential in Cobbers, as she did in all of her stock.
Once tacked, Lucy mounted and they made their way to the turf oval. Cobbers was getting more excited by the second. She bounced and bobbled under Lucy, who kept a steady rein on her. "Easy, easy." Lucy said, not wanting the filly to get away from her. Cobbers obeyed and they reached the opening to the turf course.
Cobbers settled nicely when her hooves hit the cool grass surface. Lucy clucked her up to a trot. She bowed her head and picked her feet up nicely, practically dancing along. Lucy loved the way she flowed beneath her. She kept quiet and let the filly do her thing.
Cobbers was thrilled. She loved being out on the track. She loved showing everyone what she had. She had a ton of heart put into racing. She lived to race. She loved to run. She wanted to make Lucy happy. She always wanted to please all of her riders. She was all business when she was on the track.
Once they reached the 10 furlong marker Lucy gave her rein and the filly burst into a quick breeze. All her power came out and made her flash around the track. Lucy kept her well controlled, not wanting her to waste all of her energy. "Easy, Cob, easy!" she called. The filly pulled off a little bit. She just wanted to go, but she obeyed her rider.
The final turn came quickly. Lucy couldn't believe how fast the filly was going. Once he stretch came, Cobbers shifted into another gear and pushed herself forward and away. Lucy held onto a clump of her mane, fearing she may fall. Cobbers flew along. Nothing could stand in her way. She flashed by the final line, ending the breeze with a great time.
Lucy was quite satisfied. "Extra apples for you, Cob" she said as she ran her fingers through the filly's white mane. She cooled her out on the dirt track before riding her back to the barns. It had been a good day. Lucy couldn't wait to see how Cobbers would be on the track. She couldn't wait to see her race.
